LEARNING ABOUT GOD Sunday School

LEARNING ABOUT WHO GOD IS and WHAT HE HAS DONE FOLLOWING THE DIVINELY REVEALED PLAN IN SCRIPTURE. Using “Firm Foundations–Creation to Christ”, Children’s Version of the Chronological Bible Teaching from New Tribes Mission– http://www.ntm.org/ or http://www.ntmbooks.com/

Team: Renee Puza, Dan Scheel, Melissa Abbott, Sharon Semrow, Kathy Roberts.

With joy and thanksgiving we dedicate the 3rd-6th Sunday School teaching to our Lord Jesus Christ and to His Church… with believing prayer that He will use His Word for His glory.

God has given parents the incredible responsibility of impressing a love for God on the hearts of their children (Deut. 6:5–7). God’s Word shows us that these impressions best occur as a natural overflow from the lives of parents who are seeking to love the Lord with all their hearts, souls, and strength. It also shows us that the Church has the opportunity and the responsibility to support families as it fulfills the mandate in Ephesians 4… which states that the role of the church is “to equip the saints for the work of the Lord.”

Therefore, this page is for parents who: (1) Want to know and review what is being taught in their children’s Sunday School (we like to call it “Learning About God” school) (2) Wish to teach the portion of the lesson taught when their child wasn’t able to attend. (3) Hope and desire to create a holistic approach to spiritual formation… uniting what children learn in the home and what they learn at church so that each setting reinforces what was experienced in the other.

Your child’s Handbook is for studying the lesson on their own… completing each weeks pages, memorization verses, Review Questions, and filling out each weeks Scorecard. LESSON 12 INTRODUCTION

OVERVIEW This passage of Scripture emphasizes God’s holiness and His grace. Here we see the first blood sacrifice for sin and God’s gracious act of clothing Adam and Eve. God is establishing the fact of man’s helplessness to save himself… and providing an analogy regarding the coming Deliverer. Some key points:>>The clothing Adam and Eve had made for themselves was not acceptable to God…. God made clothing of skins for them. >>God put Adam and Eve out of the garden and guarded the entrance so they could never return. >>God is the giver of all life. >>Cain and Abel were born outside of the garden… they were born sinners. >>All of Adam’s descendants were and are born sinners… separated from God.

LESSON GOALS >>To show that God knows everything and will punish all sin. >>To show that man cannot save himself from sin. >>To show that only God can make man acceptable in His sight. >>To show that the sin of Adam has been passed on to all men.

THIS LESSON SHOULD HELP YOUR CHILD >>To realize that they are a sinner. >>To realize that no one can “get away with” sin. >>To realize that there is nothing they can do to make themselves acceptable to God.

PERSPECTIVE FOR THE TEACHER This lesson introduces some basic principles that much of our society has chosen to blur or even totally reject. Sadly, among those who reject these truths are many so-called Christian groups who have chosen, as Paul said, “another gospel” (Galatians 1:6). First of all, the Word is very clear in stating that God killed animals in order to make acceptable coverings for Adam and Eve. Although the blood of animals could never pay for sin, from this time until the death of Christ, God accepted the blood of animals as a type, or picture, of the punishment that all sin deserves. Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death ….” Hebrews 9:22 says, “… without shedding of blood is no remission.” Secondly, the Word shows us that man cannot come to God on man’s terms; man must come to God in the way that God has provided as His acceptable way. Adam and Eve’s clothing of leaves was not acceptable to God; neither is anything that we might do to try to make ourselves acceptable to God.

Refusal or distortion of these two principles has given rise to many false religions. How tempted man is to follow a religion that overlooks the heavy penalty for sin! How tempted man is to try to find his own way to take care of his sin problem! How deceitful sin is! How deceitful man’s heart is! And how deceitful the Enemy is! If Satan can get us to “feel religious” and still miss the truth of God’s Word, he has subtly cut us off from God and from eternal life. As long as a man feels adequately religious, he is not going to seek to know more about God. John 9:41 records Jesus’ words to the Pharisees: .. .If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.”

This is the story of the first blood sacrifice for sin, and it shows us that God will accept only those who come to Him in the way He prescribes. Many religious groups would call this teaching “narrow.” Jesus did, too! Mat· thew 7: 13, 14 quotes His words: “Enter ye in at the strait [narrow] gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait [narrow] is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” May we be faithful to help the children to see and to choose the narrow way! The truths in this lesson are an essential part of the foundation upon which the rest of the truths, of that narrow way, can be firmly established.
